Visit Clergy House

Alfriston

Alfriston Clergy House is a charming 14th-century Wealden hall house and one of the earliest medieval timber-framed buildings in Sussex. Originally built between 1399 and 1407 as a modest residence, likely for a priest or local farmer. It features a central open hall flanked by private chambers and service areas.

Its historical significance is profound: in 1896, the newly founded National Trust purchased it for just £10, making it the first property ever saved by the Trust. The building was carefully restored in collaboration with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, setting a precedent for historic conservation approaches.
