A Day in Hastings Old Town: History, Art, and Fishing Fleets
By Kyle Davidson on 09 September 2025
Hastings is a town of two halves: the modern town centre and the historic Old Town. It’s in the Old Town where you’ll find the true character of this famous coastal destination, with its cobbled streets, medieval buildings, and rich maritime heritage.
**Explore the Twittens**
Start your day by getting lost in the Old Town’s network of narrow alleyways, or “twittens.” Here you’ll discover timber-framed houses, quirky independent shops, and traditional pubs that were once the haunt of smugglers.
**History at Every Turn**
Climb the West Hill to explore the ruins of Hastings Castle, built by William the Conqueror after his victory in 1066. Then, head down to the seafront to see The Stade, home to Europe’s largest beach-launched fishing fleet. The iconic black net huts and the Fishermen’s Museum offer a fascinating glimpse into the town’s fishing traditions.
**Art and Culture**
The Old Town has a thriving arts scene. Visit the Hastings Contemporary gallery, which showcases modern and contemporary British art in a stunning building right on the beach. There are also numerous smaller galleries and studios to discover as you wander the streets. A day in Hastings Old Town is a journey through history, art, and authentic seaside life.
